shane rawley signed with the red sox prior to the 1990 season. here's his 1990 o-pee-chee card.
here's the topps front:now the o-pee-chee back:
and the topps back:
this card is in the same vein as the 1979 pete broberg and the 1980 bill atkinson cards i showcased recently, as rawley never appeared for the bosox. he had been signed to a one-year deal, and would have given the sox a left-handed starter that they lacked during the 1989 season. his spring training performances apparently weren't up to snuff, however, and he was cut prior to the start of the season, with the boston globe reported it as a cost savings move. it's hard to imagine $325,000 being that big of a deal when we think about today's contracts, but it was back in 1990. so, this card becomes rawley's final tribute since he never appeared in the big leagues again.
voici à vous, 1990 shane rawley!
