orel hershiser was featured on one of the 1989 o-pee-chee world series cards exclusive to that set
here's the the o-pee-chee back:
after posting danny jackson's 1988 card yesterday, it's only fitting to post the bulldog today, as hershiser edged out jackson for the nl cy young award in 1988. they had matching 23-8 records, and both threw 15 complete games, but hershiser had two more shutouts (8 as opposed to jackson's 6), a few more strikeouts, and his era of 2.26 was just about half a run per game better than jackson's. what sealed the deal for orel though was his record breaking 59 consecutive scoreless innings.
in the 1988 world series, orel continued his dominance, winning both of his starts against the a's, including a game 2 shutout and the game 5 clincher. in game 2 at dodger stadium, hershiser was 3 for 3 at the plate with two doubles, an rbi, and he also scored the first run of the game.
voici à vous, 1989 world series (orel hershiser)!
