free agent skip lockwood signed with the red sox in november of 1979, prompting a team and text variation on his 1980 o-pee-chee card
here's the topps front:now the o-pee-chee back:
and the topps back:
1980 would be lockwood's final year in the big leagues as he won 3 games and saved 2 others for boston in 24 appearances. what i find interesting about skip is that he signed with the kansas city a's straight out of high school in 1964, and made his debut for them in 1965. as a third baseman! he would be converted to a pitcher in the minors over the next few years before resurfacing with the seattle pilots in 1969. he was primarily a starter with the pilots/brewers before becoming essentially a full-time reliever with the angels in 1974. he put together three strong seasons as the mets closer from 1976 - 1978, saving 54 games and winning 21 others.
voici à vous, 1980 skip lockwood!
