in december of 1987, a few days after he turned 30, lee smith was traded from the cubs to the red sox. here is his 1988 o-pee-chee card:
here's the topps front:
now the o-pee-chee back:
and the topps back:
first, i have to point out that smith was signed by buck o'neil. yes, that buck o'neil. that is good 'back of the card' information. smith pitched in boston for two-plus seasons and put up some decent numbers in doing so.
he saved a total of 58 games for the red sox and had an era of 3.04 in 139 games for them. however, the red sox needed a bat apparently, and sent smith to the cardinals for tom brunansky early in the 1990 season. smith flourished in saint louis, saving over 40 games in each of his three seasons there.
voici à vous, 1988 lee smith!
