bill swift was traded from the mariners to the giants in december of 1991 as part of the kevin mitchell deal. here is his 1992 o-pee-chee card:
here's the topps front:
now the o-pee-chee back:
and the topps back:
the mariners had transitioned swift from a starter to a reliever over the course of the previous few seasons, culminating with swift's turn as their closer in 1991. the giants, however, moved him back to the starting rotation and got immediate dividends. swift was 10-4 in 22 starts for the no-cals before being sent to the bullpen for the month of september and making 8 relief appearances and earningn a save for his troubles. i am guessing the giants were trying to limit his innings as he was pitching well at the time of his 'demotion'. in fact, swift wound up leading the league with a 2.08 era. it was all a precursor of things to come as swift won 21 games in 1993 and finished 2nd in the cy young voting.
voici à vous, 1992 bill swift!
