bill pecota was traded from the royals to the mets along with bret saberhagen in a december, 1991 deal. here's his 1992 o-pee-chee card:
here's the topps front:
now the o-pee-chee back:
and the topps back:
pecota was quite a utility player, spending time at every position on the diamond over the course of his career. with the mets in '92, however, he didn't make it out of the infield. he did get called to the mound once, though, pitching the final frame in a 19-2 blowout loss to the pirates in september. he gave up a solo home run to andy van slyke to lead off the inning, but retired the next three batters in order.
pecota became the new mario mendoza when sabermatricians came up with 'pecota' as a measure of forecasting player performance. i don't necessarily understand it all, but that doesn't make it wrong (joe morgan).
voici à vous, 1992 bill pecota!
