the dodgers used gross primarily as a reliever after the first few weeks of the season. he wound up pitching in 46 games, 36 of them in relief, and had a record of 10-11 with 3 saves. he twice struck out 9 batters in a game, including once during a 5-inning relief stint. gross returned to the starting rotation in 1992 and hurled a no-hitter against the giants on august 17th, which was also his wedding anniversary.
