downing played in only 69 games for the chisox in 1977, hitting .284 with 4 homers and 25 rbi. after the season, he was traded to the angels, and boys all over southern california began practicing their open batting stance as a result. i know i did.
i wonder if downing ever sported the turtleneck/shorts combo with the white sox. that would have been a sight to see.
